APRIL ECKFELD

I’m influenced by a succulent palette and seductive architecture of my native California where surf, citrus groves, and future technologies coexist, contrasted with the influence of my other lush tropical, colonially diverse, culturally rich home island of Puerto Rico. My childhood immersion fueled a strong aesthetic imagination enhanced by a photographic memory, ravenous curiosity, extreme intuition, and a need to build anything from a pair of jeans, to a store, to a theatrical production to match my specifications.

I hold a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts (New Genres / Fashion Design) from Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles with subsequent training in bespoke tailoring of the Savile Row tradition, following planning architectural showcase retail spaces. I’ve worked with fashion and interior design leaders including Mara White, Ron Herman, Steven Alan, BEAMS Japan, and Judith Lance. I was fortunate to have designed and distributed a highly regarded women’s (also worn by men) collection in my name featured by select stockists across the US and Japan. My work has been profiled in W Magazine, Non-No, Spring, Hanatsubaki and beyond. Behind the scenes, I’ve dressed luminaries in music, film, and art, with garments made by my hands including custom bespoke tailored menswear… starting from a drawing and measurements. As an art student in Los Angeles, the architecture, art and design worlds were a perfect merging backdrop to my unique productions. In the design world, I worked with publications such as LA Architect Magazine and Balcony Press, mentored students at Sci-Arc and provided visiting artist lectures at UCLA, worked with pioneering contemporary architects Escher Gunewardena and Studio Sofield West, assisted with the John Lautner Foundation Archives, team-worked on projects for Dwell Magazine and the Vitra Foundation, as well as workspaces and residences of stars for whom excellence, creativity, and self-invention are the norm. I’ve also worked with artists and professionals in many fields who appreciate privacy more than ever, preferring a softer aesthetic, a gentler form of beauty with rustic details.

My recent design work can be seen in the MaisonRe Mercantile space in Glassell Park, which I designed and built with Bryony Atkinson, a frequent collaborator. I’ve provided dedicated merchandising and visual consulting for the space since we opened in July  2014. I work with private clients of MaisonRe on remodeling, staging, and consulting. If it involves space planning, design, interiors, or anything visual and any type of space from work to retail to residential, I am at ease with the sensitive process of altering your sacred space, envisioning the optimal design plan for where you work, live, dream and share with colleagues, friends, and loved ones.

I currently reside in Los Angeles and continue to work between LA and New York. In my work outside of design, you can find me on camera and behind the scenes as a writer, director, and performer.

The MaisonRe team has grown to include artists that make a team of incredibly interesting, dynamic people who share a love of art, architecture, music and film, and bring their unique points of view to the tasks of finding the perfect space for your needs. I cannot imagine a better combination.
